สหพันธ์แรงงานนานาชาติกิจการเคมี พลังงาน ปิโตรเลียม และแรงงานทั่วไป (ICEM) เรียกร้องให้สมาชิกทั่วโลกร่วมกันส่งจดหมายถึงสถานทูตไทย กดดันรัฐบาลไทยปล่อย “สมยศ-สุธาชัย”
31 พ.ค. 53 – สหพันธ์แรงงานนานาชาติกิจการเคมี พลังงาน ปิโตรเลียม และแรงงานทั่วไป (ICEM) ออกแถลงการณ์เรียกร้องให้รัฐบาลไทย ปล่อยตัว สมยศ พฤกษาเกษมสุข และ ผศ.ดร.สุธาชัย ยิ้มประเสริฐ (หมายเหตุ : ในรายของสุธาชัย ได้รับการปล่อยตัวไปเมื่อวานนี้แล้ว – ประชาไท) และเรียกร้องให้สมาชิกและพันธมิตรของ ICEM ทั่วโลกทำจดหมายถึงสถานทูตไทยในแต่ละประเทศ กดดันเพื่อให้มีการปล่อยตัวบุคคลทั้งสอง ทั้งนี้ ICEM ระบุว่าบุคคลทั้งสองซึ่งเป็นแนวร่วมกับขบวนการแรงงานนานาชาติ ถูกคุมตัวไว้ที่ค่ายอดิศร จ.สระบุรี
นอกจากนี้สมาพันธ์แรงงานทั่วไปแห่งเนปาล (GEFONT) และสหภาพแรงงานดิสทริบิวชั่นแห่งนิวซีแลนด์ (NDU) ก็ได้ทำจดหมายถึงสถานทูตไทยประจำเนปาลและนิวซีแลนด์ เพื่อเรียกร้องให้ปล่อยตัวบุคคลทั้งสองด้วย
อนึ่ง สมยศ พฤกษาเกษมสุข ปัจจุบันทำงานด้านสื่อ-เคลื่อนไหวทางการเมืองและสิทธิแรงงาน เคยเป็นผู้ประสานงานของ ICEM ในประเทศไทย โดย ICEM เป็นสหพันธ์แรงงานระดับโลกที่เป็นการรวมตัวกันของสหภาพแรงงานในกิจการเคมี พลังงาน ปิโตรเลียม และแรงงานทั่วไป มีสมาชิกกว่า 20 ล้านคน จาก 467 สหภาพแรงงาน ใน 132 ประเทศ
ทั้งนี้ GEFONT เป็นสมาพันธ์แรงงานที่สำคัญของเนปาลมีสมาชิกกว่า 304,000 คน ส่วน NDU เป็นหนึ่งในสหภาพแรงงานภาคเอกชนที่ใหญ่ที่สุดของนิวซีแลนด์ มีสมาชิกมากกว่า 20,000 คน

ICEM Angered by Thai Arrests
The ICEM was shocked and angered by the arrests of labour and political rights advocate, Somyot Pruksakasemsuk, and Associate Professor Suthachai Yimprasert, in Thailand, and will be detained until earliest 6 June.
The pair presented themselves to police on hearing of their arrest warrants. Neither of them were members of the core Red Shirt group, they were following events closely in their capacity as journalist and academic.
Both friends of the international labour movement, Somyot and Suthachi are detained at the Adisorn Army Base in Saraburi, 115km north of capital Bangkok. Suthachai is on hungar strike in protest of his arrest.
ICEM affiliates and supporters around the world are requested to write to your local Thai embassies and call on the release of both men.
Somyot is a former ICEM project coordinator in Thailand.
The arrest warrants were issued in connection to the incident on 21 May 2010 at 13.00, when Somyot and Suthachai, in the name of the 24th of June Democracy Group, held a press conference in front of the House No. 111 Foundation. This was a completely peaceful event.
The ICEM joins calls for the immediate of both men.

I write to ask you to make immediate representation to your Government for the immediate release of Somyot Pruksakasemsuk and Associate Professor Suthachai Yimprasert. We understand that both men are currently being held at Adisorn Army Base in Saraburi.
We know both men, in particular Somyot Pruksakasemsuk, through their work for the international trade union movement. We have come to know them as loyal Thai citizens who have a passionate belief in Human Rights. Both men are very well internationally known and respected.
Neither man was part of the core leadership of the “red shirts” and in recent times each has been playing a more independent role as a journalist and academic promoting freedom of speech.
We understand that the Criminal Court agreed with the Centre for Resolution of the Emergency Situation (CRES) on Friday to extend the detention of Suthachai and Somyot for another seven days, despite Suthachai’s hunger strike over alleged CRES human rights violations.
Both Suthachai and Somyot had surrendered to the CRES when they heard that warrants were out for their arrest. The warrants were issued in regard to the incident on 21 May 2010 at 13.00, when Somyot and Suthachai, in the name of the 24th of June Democracy Group, held a press conference in front of the House No. 111 Foundation. This was a completely peaceful event.
The lawyer for Suthachai, Mr Krisdang has said no charges were pressed against them, and no proper inquiry session had been arranged during their detention.
We understand that Somyot and Suthachai are now to be held until 6 June 2010. We strongly urge their immediate release.
Please urgently respond to this request and inform us of what is happening to these two men.
