CD seller gets 3 years in jail for lèse majesté

On 4 July, the Criminal Court sentenced Sathian (family name withheld) to 6 years in jail for lèse majesté and fined him 100,000 baht for illegally selling video CDs, and, as he pleaded guilty, the penalties were reduced by half.

According to the public prosecutor, Sathian was arrested on 19 March 2011 near the Democracy Monument for unauthorized sales of video CDs and publicizing the contents which were offensive to the monarchy.

The court found him guilty under Article 112 of the Criminal Code and the 2008 Films and Video Act.

Formerly a hotel cook, Sathian started to join red-shirt rallies in 2009.  He was arrested during a rally to commemorate the crackdown on the red shirts last year.

There are striking similarities between the Thai and Malaysian elites' reactions to political opposition, Sam. Both the Barisan Nasional and the regressive 'elite' here in Thailand point to NED lurking behind the scenes. Fits well with the familiar Thai 'invisible hand' routine.

I imagine that it is the Royal Thai Army's cyberwarfare division that is behind the ramped up comment spam attacks here. Of course with their history of chowing down at the US Wehrmacht's table it hardly befits them to pursue such claims directly so they've subcontracted the job, apparently. In fact all their cyberwarfare efforts seem to be subcontracted. You could ask Captain Midnight, Vichai N, although its unlikely that you'll get much of an answer from that quarter.

A direct link to the US National Endowment for Democracy website is conclusive, irrefutable evidence. The fact that Prachatai deceives its readership by attempting to obfuscate and hide this funding is all the more telling.

It is a simple matter to look at NED's board of directors and do OBJECTIVE research into who they really are and what their agenda might be for destabilizing both Thailand and Malaysia's government.

So what's that supposed to prove? That just makes Prachatai's taking of money from the US government all the more horrific and hypocritical doesn't it? Do you realize how infantile your argument is?

Prachatai receives money from Rockefeller Foundation, George Soros' Open Society, Sigrid Rausing Trust via the Global Human Rights Fund, CODI, the US government via National Endowment for Democracy, and many, many more. In fact, they get millions of baht from foreign governments and foundations and then proceed to hide it on their website.

Two wrongs don't make a right - and its is breathtaking stupidity to try to hold up the "villain" Thai army's receiving of funds as a means to somehow vindicate Prachatai doing the same.

But if you really want to know, the US funds the Thai military in the hopes that they can co-opt members of its officer corps over time. This is spelled out verbatim in US Brookings Institute's "Which Path to Persia?" report.

..unless of course u believe that the democrat were a legitimate government. I hv read your LD blog and i find it interesting..and not unreasonable your quest to have Prachatai giving the details of the fundings but i also question your so called "neutrality".
If u are indeed Herve..maybe we could communicate in french..i will understand your better maybe:)
