FOX News Compared to ASTV

Amidst the current political climate where the ideological dividing lines within political parties take form, there is an obvious phenomenon that is occurring.  This comes in the form of politically motivated media organization. What has gone down over the past several years is quite interesting from the perspective of those who study how influential media outlets can become.

Stylized reports by well-honed news anchors are used as the main outlets in convincing the general public.  Strong and harsh words are used against targeted politicians to signal hatred towards particular groups or individuals.  In the ASTV case, much of the hatred was targeted towards former PM Thaksin Shinawatra.  Though there was additional fuel added for all politicians aligned with the Thai Rak Thai, People Power, and Peua Thai parties.  The main objective was to distinguish 'bad' politicians out from the 'good' hence showing all mainstream press that they don't know what they are doing or at least were not digging deep enough for dirt on Thaksin-aligned politicians.  This was the modus operandi and it worked to a particular extent.  ASTV-Manager has been able to take charge in the rooting out of allegedly corrupt politicians, leading other bodies even the National Anti-Corruption Commission, the Democrat Party, and the courts.

For FOXNews it was rather simple: rally that conservative base hard.  Over in the United States, instead of using the nation-religion-king centerpiece, FOXNews opted for a rather simple advocacy of national security over personal privacy, religio-traditional pro-life no-gay-marriage stance over the more liberal counterparts in all of those ideas.  This simple advocacy resonates with folks in the heartland of America--already dissatisfied with the world that was quickly changing and values that were quickly evolving around them.  By instilling fear into the hearts and minds of Americans, FOXNews has been able to sensitize Americans to rally behind its networks' anchors.  Bash Obama and those liberal Democrats, rally the conservative base around the Glen Becks, the Sean Hannities, and the Bill O'Reillies, and eventually the Republican party will come begging.

Comparisons are obvious. Both ASTV and FOXNews have and always been politically motivated.  They don't answer to political parties but rather political parties answer to them.  In the end ASTV-Manager undercuts the Democrat Party's base in Thailand, while the FOXNews network undercuts the Republican Party's base in the United States.  Look at what's gone down with the New York District Congressional Elections, the Republican Party candidate there, Dede Scozzfava, couldn't even get her own party base's support.  This inevitably forced her candidacy's withdrawal 1 week prior to election date.  The Democrat Party candidate, Bill Owens, actually won in that election over a right-wing independent Doug Hoffman, unofficially endorsed by FOXNews' popular anchors.  The idea behind both ASTV and FOXNews is to have its own networks become such a political force that policy agendas can be dictated from the editorial room and the anchors' desks, or better yet from Sondhi Limthongkul's mansion or Rupert Murdoch's penthouses.  The former is known to have wanted to emulate the latter in his hey days.

What lies ahead?  The future of FOXNews is bright since it has over 2.5 million viewers each night, not bad for a news network on cable founded in 1996.  It has one of the world's richest media moguls behind it in Rupert Murdoch and one of the world's richest media enterprises in News Corporation financing its venture.  In due time regardless of the political hatred it spews, FOXNews will overtake all liberal mainstream network (if it has not already).  Could its CEO Roger Ailes actually run for president? No one is stopping him and www.politico.com is already reporting that there is a move for such.  They could conceivably form a rival party to that of the Republicans.  Next year at least 10 Republican Congressional seats will be contested against independents under the umbrella of the Tea Party movement, a campaign heavily pushed by FOXNews' most controversial host Glen Beck.  It will be analogous to what New Politics is attempting to do with the Democrats here.

Sondhi Limthongkul, founder of ASTV-Manager, is head of the New Politics Party.  He has already transformed his engine from a media outlet into a political canvassing unit tricking younger generations using raunchy entertainment gossips and criminal news expose, while slowing massaging their brains with manipulated politicians-hating headlines of relevant news stories.  Nonetheless it suffers a worse fate due to lack of funding and lack of the mainstream audience's interest.  Could this change? Perhaps so but no one knows.  Nevertheless the evolution and eventual devolution of FOXNews and ASTV will be cases worth studying for students of political science and media & communications in the years to come.  The latter has already led an uprising against a democratically elected prime minister while the former is leading a conservative uprising against another iconic democratically president.

All news agencies have a

All news agencies have a particular ‘leaning’ or bias. Plenty of studies have shown that most news agencies lean liberal; NYT, BBC, that is the nature of journalism, reporting ‘problems’ within society. Foxnews has a clear conservative leaning, but they go to great lengths to assure that opposing sides are clearly and intelligently covered. This is not the case with ASTV, which routinely suppresses the opposition, and that is a huge distinction between the two.

Foxnews does not

Foxnews does not "intelligently cover" anything. There is a difference between covering a certain point of view or just producing junk. Foxnews is crap. Even these few sentences here feel wasted when talking about this tv channel. I feel sorry for everyone believing it's actually a news station. It's hard to describe what they do, maybe best to say there are some sort of moving images in the channel.

Proof?

A station that covers stories like this, can't be called a news channel, can it?

Yes, ASTV and DTV, both are

Yes, ASTV and DTV, both are like Fox TV. And I like to watch those channels, because I like to know "unconventional" view points, which is different from those of main stream media. I tend to think DTV's propaganada is more childish than Fox and ASTV probably because the educational level of target viewer is different. For example, yesterday night. the red TV is claiming that "Thaksin's appointment of Cambodian economic adviser is same in its nature as the appointment of Dr. Supachai to UNCTAD head, so we should celebrage it." Probably, the viewer cannot understand more complicated argument than this kind of stuff, so they choose to use such a rethoric, I guess. This morning, ASTV's talk show discussing the international treaties related to the overlapped area in Gulf of Thailand, on which the government now considering to cancel the MOU with Cambodian government. It's very informative TV program, though I don't believe all what they claimed is right. If you want to know about Thkasin and opposition party go watch ASTV, and if you want to know about the corruption about the current government, watch the red TV, with a grain of solt, of course, then you could get more information than you can usually recevie from MSM. So both channels are beneficial if viewer learn media leteracy, but talking about the intellgent level, I think Yellow TV is diffinitely higher than Red TV.

are u sure plaadip? how abt 'self-righteousness' level?

same:)

same:)

Hmm..perhaps u are right

Hmm..perhaps u are right Oops!

Both Yellow and red channels

Both Yellow and red channels are worse than Fox TV on the score. Fox TV, at least, invites their "opponents" (dem's surrogates) in the show druing the period of election canmpaign.(I don't know now they are still doing it, because I rarely watch the channel nowadays.) Neither ASTV nor Red do it.

But in case of Fox TV, they invite their opponents to crush them, and anchorpersons are usually most eloquent in the discussion, they sometimes shut up their guests who made "outrageous" comments from their viewpoint. I remember that an anchorman shouted at a commentator,"I will never invite you again to my program!!" But this is an exiting show for the viewer in a particular mindset. They can defuse their frustration by watching the shows. I think it's part of the market startegy of Rupert Murdock

The funding source(s) of

The funding source(s) of ASTV- that's what this article is missing.

the funding source of ASTV?

the funding source of ASTV? ?)

Yes, you need lots of cash to

Yes, you need lots of cash to keep a political mobilisation going. MMG (Manager Media Group) has reported some six thousand millions baht in deficit for quite some time. Apart from the Manager Daily, none of its medias seem to be making money. Despite this fact, ASTV could afford to broadcast the gatherings of the yellow shirt PADs 24 hr non-stop between May and December of last year- that's over 6 months of extensive live broadcasting.

Tell me, how could a satellite TV heavily in debt afford such a thing? And if I'm correct (when I say this I know I am :), ASTV has never released their net income figure.

For some reason, investigative journalism doesn't exist in this nation. Sad but true.

"For some reason,

"For some reason, investigative journalism doesn't exist in this nation. Sad but true." Agreed! It's also incredibly frustrating, & makes for generally unsatisfactory & wholly unsatisfying, 'airhead'-style articles. Your " For some reason," is obviously tongue-in-cheek.

agree with u, submarine, i

agree with u, submarine, i wonder if Plaadip and others might want to make some comments abt the source(s) of funding for ASTV and Red stations(well for the latter ..it seems obvious. although i might get it wrong)

Give me a news source with

Give me a news source with its own agenda over political party mouthpiece anytime.

At least they believe in what they say, and they are passionate about it, and they one way or another earn trust of large sections of society who watch their programs.

On the other hand we have some politicos who set up media companies not to report or opine but to promote their assigned agenda.

Somehow these days "media freedom" means freedom to brainwash, with the argument being that people are better informed, they will know the difference.

I don't see that happening. We have two brainwashed groups instead that work as gravity centers for every one else.

Anything that M.L. Nattakorn

Anything that M.L. Nattakorn Devakula writes is suspect, politically and otherwise. I would never give him a vote to represent my interests in any field.
As to media being politically motivated, has he just woken up? The media in Thailand, and elsewhere, has generally been politically motivated for one reason or another. Here in Korat the media are politically motivated, and if they don't toe the line, as we did not do in founding the Korat Post, then the entire machine that runs this place puts you on a blacklist you will never leave.
so M.L. Nattakorn Devakula, when you compare ASTV and Fox, why not drag in the Army channels here and even many community radio stations that are politically motivated?
As to this new politics party, Sondhi himself said some time ago it would need around 100 million Baht a month to keep going. Now where is that kind of money going to come from? This new party is, I believe, meant for lese majestic heights than it has been associating itself with, eventually drifting down toward a "Had been wannabee" that never really made the cut.

There's little doubt that

There's little doubt that Thaksin and his allies have been funding the Red Shirts movement and Peuah Thai. This is quite an open knowledge. In the Time's recent interview with Thaksin, he didn't really deny this.

The funding sources of ASTV-Manager-Yellow shirt PAD have been more secretive. FYI, it costs approximately 100 million Baht per day for a live coverage like the one they broadcasted on ASTV News 1 of last year; ASTV had it running for 193 days-- you work out the maths! This certainly was one of the most expensive operations to topple elected government. My advice for any progressive journalist/media figure interested in probing into the operation of ASTV-Manager is-- 'just follow the money.'

I don't believe it cost

I don't believe it cost 100million to organize live coverage. From my memory Sondhi was speaking of organizing the whole rally, and the figure was far below that.

Could somebody find out where this 100 million figure come from?

No, no stats. Nobody knows

No, no stats. Nobody knows how much ASTV really spent during May-December 2008 (well, apart from Sonthi Lim and his donators of course). The figure I gave is according to a friend who previously worked with British Sky; he estimated £1.7-1.8 million for 24 hr. What did Sonthi Lim say? Not sure if you can rely on the words of a man who doesn't report the revenue/income of his organisation. If I recall correctly he used to say it cost a million Baht/day to organise the protest, I think the real figure could be much higher. Still, mobilising "people" (transport, food, water, medical, concert, etc.) is much cheaper than the cost of media. When asked about the source of funding for their 'colour', both Sonthi and Thaksin suddenly became a like-minded thinker; they told reporters that 'the people' were the financial contributors of their group. The 'people' of Thailand can never paid as much as the "mysterious few".

Sorry my discussion on this topic has to end here. Good luck.

Well, I think there are two

Well, I think there are two major costs here - leasing the satellite slot and putting the crew on the ground.

True opens new 24/7 channels up almost every week and fills them with rubbish, so satellite costs aren't very high, even if True gets a better deal from their providers than ASTV from their Hong Kong company.

Crew on the ground cost peanuts. Equipment is already there, they don't need to rent it.

Engineers in the studio get their usual salaries.

I have no idea what they could spend 100 mil on even if they wanted.

After 2006 protests Sondhi said that some people paid very good money in his accounts, at 100-200k a pop. Also receiving ASTV is not free and their subscriber base grew tremendously in the past couple of years.

Big rallies like UDD must be more expensive than PAD long sit ins with their fixed water/food costs for a couple of thousand of hard core supporters.

Kasian Techapira (05/09/2008):

2.   The PAD’s marathon rally seems to be the world’s first demonstration that has been broadcast live through satellite TV, radio and internet, 24 hours a day and 7 days a week, for 100 days.  That creates a grotesque mix of a reality show and a political campaign, and widens the contemporary western-style ‘audience democracy’, in which people are mostly viewers who vote for professional politicians’ performances through rating polls, to include ‘off the protest site’ virtual participation via tuning to the Manager Group’s FM 97.75 or ASTV.

But, on the other hand, that should make the PAD’s rally the world’s most expensive.  500,000-1,000,000 baht a day are being paid for the rent of the stage and PA system, gasoline for generators, food and allowances for staff, speakers and artists, and salaries and expenses of live broadcasting, while donations and income from selling t-shirts and merchandise are 300,000-1,000,000 baht a day.

With only one day’s budget of the PAD, normal protests by other people or even the pro-government United Front of Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) would last a week.

During the first 25 days of the rally, the PAD received 26 million baht and paid 24 million, according to the PAD’s coordinator Suriyasai Katasila.  During the three months, the PAD has sold 90,000 ‘Patriotic Chinese Descendants’ t-shirts for 25 million baht, according to political scientist and Sondhi Limthongkul’s close associate Chai-Anan Samudavanija.  And after the Government House siege, the PAD has 6.6 million baht remaining in its bank accounts, plus gold worth 1,056,000 baht, according to one of the PAD’s leaders, Chamlong Srimuang.

The PAD-style rally needs huge financial resources, and the fact indicates the social and economic status of its support base.
