Thanks. Very interesting.
The surprise within the Bangkok "elite" at the surprise the rest of the world has shown with the nosedive in Thailand since 2006 is testimony to just how much the "democracy" in Thailand was meant to be window-dressing, never taken seriously by the "real", tanks and guns powers in the country.
They knew they could crush the people at will, while people outside the country thought the Thai people had achieved some real measure of power within the country.
The reactionaries were not surprised when things returned to "normal", as Abhisit is so fond of saying, with the coup of 2006, and then the putsch of 2008, while everyone else was and still is shocked.
And now the academics like Hewison are "bored" with Thai politics.
If the people of Thailand ever do gain control over their country it will be in spite of the military, the media, the Bangkok "elite", and the Neoliberals of the world. All are arrayed against them. The people of Thailand are on their own.

weak analysis and vague comments showing Kevin's somewhat non-partisan approach (Why not just come out and say: "like many academics I used to be critical of Thaksin and now I can see that in fact Thaksin was right after all"!!)

Jimu: So you expect partisanship? If you read Hewison's writings on Thaksin over the years you will see that he was critical of some of Thaksin's activities and positive on others. But then a partisan would not want a balanced view I guess.

Guys, if you want a bit of a clearer picture, go for the book' TKNS'. There're certain figures that Kevin and Pitch dare not discussing in the open, unless they do not mind spending 15 years behind the bars. You know what I mean, 'he who must not be name'.
