Suit and diplomacy
Frank G Anderson

Accusing America’s single-most important ally in Southeast Asia of unwarranted interference in the affairs of the United States may sound a bit strong. And especially so in this age of official apologies and expressions of regret at offending those with whom we Americans maintain diplomatic relations.

Rice After the Floods: Production Up, Exports Down
Aim Sinpeng
2012-02-22 18:06

The 2011 floods that ravaged one-quarter of Thailand have not, surprisingly, adversely affected overall rice production. That should be good news for the government. Since rice has become one of the most politicized commodities, keeping rice farmers happy has also become a policy priority. But the Yingluck administration is facing a rough road ahead with its flagship rice mortgage scheme, partially because of the programme’s popularity but also because it is not likely to be sustainable given short-term market conditions.

THAILAND: Continued impunity for enforced disappearance in Thailand
Asian Legal Resource Centre
2012-02-21 17:00

A written statement submitted to the UN Human Rights Council by the Asian Legal Resource Centre (ALRC), a non-governmental organisation with general consultative status

The Asian Legal Resource Center wishes to bring the importance of continued action to end enforced disappearance in Thailand to the attention of the Human Rights Council. While the signing of the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance on 9 January 2012 by the Government of Thailand is a positive step, the Convention must be ratified and domestic laws must be passed and implemented if its provisions are to be made concrete. As disappearance is one form of violence routinely used by Thai state security forces with impunity against citizens, the opportunity to secure accountability represented by the ratification and full implementation of the Convention is significant.

All press and public are invited to observe the "NLA Sit-in" trial, the case of which stemmed from direct actions by a thousand strong activists in 2007 against the rush to pass repressive laws by the National Legislative Assembly, installed after the 2006 coup. The act of climbing over the fence of the Parliament buildings in Bangkok by the protesters has led to charges being pressed against them by the Office of Senate Secretariat. Among the ten activists joining the protest and having to face the charges including Mr.

Time to Define Terror
Frank G Anderson
2012-02-21 09:31

On 17 February 2012, Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister General Yuthasak Sasiprapa offered two observations, both ill-founded, unfounded and confounded. Despite an international body stating Thailand was a great place to launder money, the general says “Ain’t so!” As well, despite Sukumvit Soi 71 being littered with bomb debris and shadows of cleaned-away blood, he also insists that there is no concrete evidence that the Valentine’s Day Iranian bomber attacks were acts of terror.
